Sekhmet is one of the primary deities in an ancient Egyptian mythology. Often portrayed as a woman with the head of a lioness seated on a throne or standing, Sekhmet is a member of the famous Memphis Triad, which was composed of the gods Ptah - Sekhmet –Nefertum.. Sekhmet has been given several names, including those of “The Great Lady”, “Beloved of Ptah”, “Ain Ra”, “Lady of War”, Lady of Upper and Lower Egypt”, “Lady of the Libyan Lan”, and many other titles. The lioness form reflects the strength of this sacred goddess of Memphis, as she is known for being a strong female deity. Sekhmet is always represented as a woman with the head of a lioness, either standing or sitting on the throne that is in turn adorned with the symbols of the Unification of Upper and Lower Egypt. She also holds in her hand the ankh sign (sign of life), and also is illustrated with a sun disk and cobra above her head. The center of her worship was at the ancient capital of Memphis, and she was considered the wife of the creator god Ptah and the mother of Nefertum, the god of the lotus. Together they represented the Memphis Triad. Ra, the sun god, in the ancient Egyptian belief, angered people for mocking him. So, he sent Sekhmet to take revenge on them . the avenging image of Hathor . in order to kill these people. However, Sekhmet enjoyed this mission so much that it so popularized it that it wiped out almost all of the people. Here, Ra deceived Sekhmet by offering her large quantities of red-colored beer, which resembles the color of blood, so she drank it and got drunk and calmed down until she stopped killing.
